The Enervit Tour of Cambridgeshire, 6 & 7 June 2015, Peterborough

The UK’s first true fully closed road Gran Fondo and Time Trial events.

Four members of The Thanet RC Race Team made the trip up to Peterborough yesterday, for the inaugural Tour of Cambridge UCI World Cycling Tour closed road Time Trial, a 28km closed road Time Trial, on a rolling course in very strong winds.

The event was run from the Peterborough Show Ground with the 700 riders starting inside the main hall from a pro start ramp at 30 second intervals. The event had all the trappings of a pro race and it was great so have 4 Thanet riders representing the club at this prestigious event.

First up was Simon putting in the fastest Thanet time of the day of 40:01 giving him 10th in his age group and qualifying for the worlds. Up next was the youngest member of the race team, Dan Martin, Dan managed a 41:37. Wining a UCI gold medal, UCI Jersey and a qualifying place in the worlds! After a short wait it was time for Rick to step up on to the start ramp, Rick put in a super strong ride earning a 40:51 and 17th in his age group and also qualifying for a place at the world championships. The final race team rider to roll off the starting ramp was Rob, going well and enjoying the rolling course everything was pointing towards a good time. Sadly with three miles to go Rob picked up a rear wheel puncture…not wanting a DNF, Rob pushed on and got a 42:24.

A well organised event, recommended to all members in 2016. The big question now is will any of the Thanet riders make the trip to Denmark to represent the club in the World Championships later this year???
